Green Handled Shoe Knife aka "The Tater Peeler" Kitchen Knife!....
|
I grew up in south central Ohio and my parents worked
in a shoe factory in the 1950s and 1960s. Mom stayed
home when the kids came along, and in her kitchen
drawer were these green handled knives. She used
them for cleaning vegetables, but I remember her
using them primarily as "tater peelers". These knives
were a part of my youth, and I thought everyone had
and used them. I grew up and ran into others whose
moms had used these knives in their kitchens, but no
one knew where to find them. Dad had said they were
shoe knives from the factories and I began to search
for a source for them. I really wanted to have a few in
my kitchen drawers, partly from nostalgia and partly
because they were great to use in the kitchen!
They go through potatoes very easily and the round
handle fits nicely in your hand. (my wife has arthritis
and she says these knives don't hurt her hands when
slicing potatoes and vegetables like her other knives
do).
I have finally found a source for these knives and the
best part is they're made in the U.S.A.! I am happy to
offer these knives on my website and make them
available again for everyone who remembers those
green handled knives our mothers and grandmothers
used in their kitchens.
